What can I expect during my massage?

Picture
When you enter my office you will be welcomed and asked to fill out a short health history form so I can learn more about your health and your body. All information you provide will be confidential and only shared with another health care provider with your permission. Anything we discuss during your session will also be held in confidence. When you complete your form I will go over it and ask your some specific questions. i want to better understand how you are feeling and what kind of technique you might need and enjoy.

The treatment room should be comfortably warm, if it is cold outside the massage table will also be heated for your comfort. There will be relaxing music playing and soft lighting. I will leave the room to wash my hands and prepare for your session. You will undress to your comfort level. People who get massage frequently usually wear nothing, many wear panties or briefs, a few keep their bra on, and occasionally someone wants to be fully clothed. There is no right or wrong, do what you are comfortable with. You will then get on the table and fully cover yourself with the sheet and blanket. I will knock and make sure you are on the table and covered before I enter. I will only uncover the body part I am working on during your massage. A typical massage will include your back, legs and feet, arms, hands, neck, face and scalp. Please remove necklaces, bracelets and large earrings.

Lubricant is used to reduce friction between my hands and your skin. I use creams and oils specifically made for massage therapy. The oil and cream I use should not stain permanently should it get on your clothing, and the ingredients are as unprocessed as I can find. In the Winter you will find that getting a massage is a great way to re-moisturize your skin!

As we get started I will ask you how the pressure of my strokes are for you. Everyone enjoys something different and I can't guess what you like, so it's up to you to let me know what you want, firmer or lighter! Massage does not have to hurt to be effective. You can also tell me if you would like different music, more blankets or less, if you need to change position, a drink of water or a tissue. You have paid for this session and you should be comfortable so you can relax completely. Don't hesitate to speak up if something is not to your liking.

During the massage I may ask you questions about how you are feeling, depending on the goal of that day's session. Other than that, I don't encourage chatting, as it distracts you from relaxing. You will get more out of your massage if you are quiet and focus on your breathing. I will give you a better massage if I can focus on what I am doing rather than our conversation.

When the session is over I will tell you to take your time getting up. This will give you time to open your eyes and get used to the idea of moving again. I want you to get up slowly off the table, and not rush getting dressed. I don't mean for you to fall asleep! I may have another client coming in and need to change the sheets and prepare for their arrival.

After your massage we'll sit down and discuss what you liked and how you feel. You can ask any questions you like. Some people feel kind of spacey after massage and find it hard to concentrate, this is normal and will pass. At this time I will ask you for payment and we'll book another session if you like.

Tipping is not required - do not feel obligated. Some of my clients tip, and some don't. It doesn't matter to me. I would rather you show your appreciation by taking some of my cards and referring your friends.
